About this tour

Cairo was founded in 969 and its Fatimid, Mamluk and Ottoman core still works as a city. This walk reads the street as a timeline, with the guide opening doors most visitors walk past.

Al-Azhar first: the mosque founded in 970 and the university that grew around it, the oldest still teaching. Shoes off, scarves lent, and ten minutes in the white marble courtyard before the city noise returns.

Al-Muizz Street north: the Qalawun complex (1285) with its mausoleum, the Barquq madrasa, the sabil-kuttab fountains that gave water and taught children, the copper lane, and Bayt al-Suhaymi if it is open. The walk ends at the Al-Hakim Mosque and the two Fatimid gates of 1087, where you can walk the wall.

Then back down to Khan El Khalili for free time or a guided lap of the spice, silver and lantern lanes and a tea at El Fishawy. Drop-off at your hotel.
