The museum holds 100,000 objects on a site the size of 70 football pitches. Without a guide most visitors see the atrium, the staircase and a fraction of Tutankhamun. With one, three hours tell the story from Narmer to Cleopatra in order.

Your guide meets you at the hotel with a private car (or at the museum entrance if you prefer to meet there; the price is the same). Inside, the visit starts at the 11 m colossus of Ramses II in the atrium and climbs the Grand Staircase, where royal statues stand in chronological order with the pyramids visible through the glass at the top.

The main galleries are arranged by period and theme: kingship, society and beliefs across the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms and the Graeco-Roman era. The guide picks the pieces that matter (the Khufu statuette, the Meidum geese, the Amarna family) and skips the rest so you keep your energy for the last part.

The Tutankhamun galleries show the whole tomb: the golden mask, the three coffins, the four shrines, the chariots, the thrones, the jewellery, the 130 walking sticks. Your guide explains the discovery of 1922 room by room. On the way out you can add the Khufu solar boat museum (extra ticket) or a coffee on the terrace with the pyramids in view.
