In 2021 the royal mummies left Tahrir in the Pharaohs' Golden Parade for the new museum in Fustat. This day starts with them and follows the story of Egypt through the Islamic and Christian old city.
The NMEC opened in 2021 next to the lake of Ain El Sira. The main hall runs from prehistory to modern Egypt through crafts, textiles and daily life; the Royal Mummies Hall below is designed like a tomb, quiet and dark, with each king in a separate chamber. The Citadel of Saladin and the Muhammad Ali Mosque come next, then lunch at a restaurant in the old city.
The afternoon covers Coptic Cairo inside the Roman fortress of Babylon (the Hanging Church, St Sergius, Ben Ezra) and ends at Khan El Khalili, where the guide walks you through the lanes and leaves you time to shop and drink a tea at El Fishawy.
