Fayoum is 100 km south-west of Cairo and looks like nowhere else in Egypt: a green depression around a salt lake with the Sahara starting at its edge. It is the day for families and for anyone who has had enough of monuments.
Pickup at 07:30. Two hours to Wadi El Rayan, a protected area of two lakes joined by Egypt's only waterfalls, formed in the 1970s by drainage water from the oasis. Walk to the falls, swim if you like in summer, and watch the birds.
Then the 4x4 takes over: across the dunes of the Wadi El Rayan protectorate to the Magic Lake, which changes colour with the light, and to the big dunes for an hour of sandboarding (boards and instruction included; you walk up, you slide down).
Lunch in Tunis village, the potters' village on the shore of Lake Qarun, at a garden restaurant: grilled chicken or duck, rice, vegetables, salads. Time to visit a pottery workshop before the drive back. In Cairo about 17:30.

Overall fun experience, but not exactly as we imagined it to be. What you get is a driver for the duration of the trip. Our driver Shady was great. Booked this as our more adventurous day for our honeymoon! I enjoyed getting to see the desert. Sandboarding is so much fun going down but very much NOT fun climbing back up the steep hot sand dune and I scrapped up my wrist & ankle pretty bad on the first slide down.
