Het Grand Egyptian Museum in Gizeh, 2 km van de piramides, toont 100.000 objecten, inclusief de complete Toetanchamon-collectie van meer dan 5.000 stukken. Het bezoek
You enter under a facade of alabaster and glass into an atrium where the 11 m colossus of Ramses II stands, moved here from Cairo's railway square in 2006. The Grand Staircase climbs past sixty royal statues in chronological order to a window with the pyramids framed at the top.
The twelve main galleries run from prehistory to the Graeco-Roman period in three themes: kingship, society and beliefs. The Tutankhamun galleries show the whole tomb for the first time since 1922: the golden mask, the three coffins, the four gilded shrines, six chariots, the thrones and beds, the jewellery, the 130 walking sticks. The Khufu solar boat has its own building with a separate ticket.
With a guide, three hours cover the staircase, the highlights of the main galleries and all of Tutankhamun. Without one, most visitors miss half of it. The museum has a children's museum, restaurants and a terrace with the pyramids in view.

- Photos without flash are allowed everywhere, including Tutankhamun
- Large bags go to the cloakroom; keep a small one
- Book the afternoon slot if you did the pyramids in the morning
