Al-Muizz is a one-kilometre street with a thousand years of buildings on it, and the best food in Cairo is sold on its side lanes. This walk does both, slowly.
The walk starts at Bab Zuweila, the southern gate of Fatimid Cairo (1092), climbs a minaret for the view over the domes, and enters the tentmakers' covered street. The first bite is ta'ameya (Egyptian falafel made with fava beans) from a stand that has fried it for fifty years.
Al-Muizz Street runs north past the Sultan al-Ghuri complex, the Qalawun complex with its hospital and mausoleum (1285), the Barquq madrasa and Bayt al-Suhaymi, a merchant's house of 1648. Between them: koshari, the national dish of rice, lentils, pasta and fried onions; sugar-cane juice; feteer, the layered pastry, sweet or savoury.
The walk ends at Khan El Khalili with a coffee or mint tea at El Fishawy and a plate of basbousa or konafa. Lunch is unnecessary afterwards. Your guide points out the honest shops if you want to buy spices or lanterns. Drop-off at your hotel, or stay on in the bazaar.
Evening slot starts at 16:00.
Minaret climb; first tasting.

À propos des billets: Six food tastings, the Bab Zuweila minaret ticket and the mosques are included.

Our guide Sabra was excellent. He was very knowledgable and flexible. He went out of his way to accommodate us outside the normal tour itinerary. He introduced us to local food and helped us to understand the art of negotiating. He balanced the tour with the midday sun. Keeping us comfortable in the shade as much as possible…
Our tour guide was Randa who was extremely knowledgeable and made the walking tour fun and informative. A good way to see and experience a bit of the Old Cairo and learn some of its history. Highly recommend.
